A gas mask, refers to a specialized respirator designed to protect
firefighters and individuals from inhaling dangerous substances
present in a fire environment. While the term "gas mask" is broadly
used, firefighters primarily rely on a more robust device called a
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
An SCBA typically consists of:
A full-face mask that forms a tight seal to protect
the wearer's eyes and respiratory system from contaminants.
A high-pressure air cylinder (often made of steel
or lightweight carbon fiber) worn on the back, containing compressed
air, not pure oxygen.
A regulator system that reduces the high pressure
from the cylinder to a breathable level.
